Mysore style is most intimate, personal and developed way of practicing yoga, and is also the most traditional, time-honored and historic method. The ‘Mysore Style’ method is named after the city where Shri K. Pattabhi Jois lived and taught, and now his grandson R. Sharath, and daughter, Saraswathi, continuing this teaching style passed down from Krishnamacharya.
In this special class, you learn to take individual responsibility for your yoga practice and develop a deeply trusting relationship with your teacher. It is perhaps the only way that the more advanced asanas or postures can be learned safely, with proper skill and dedication. By committing yourself fully to one yoga style, one teaching method and a regular practice, you open the door to deeper levels of your body, mind and spirit.
How Mysore Style is Taught
The Mysore style of yoga practice is a particular way of teaching the Ashtanga Yoga tradition as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the southern Indian City of Mysore. Some differences in this method from the usual modern way in which yoga is taught:
In Mysore style students learn the fixed order of postures using a specific movement-breathing technique called vinyasa krama. Each student is given their yoga routine according to their ability. Newer and more beginning students tend to have a much shorter practice than do those with more experience. As one gains more strength, stamina, flexibility and concentration, additional postures are given to the student. One advantage of the "Mysore" method is that, because it teaches yoga according to one's individual capacity, it accommodates everyone of all levels even those without any prior yoga experience.
